Leaders of constituent parties of the People’s Welfare Front would meet in Chennai on July 19 to decide about contesting the local body polls, MDMK leader Vaiko said here on Monday.

The MDMK party men were not demoralised by defeat in the Assembly polls and the exit of a few parties from the PWF would not affect its prospects, he said while talking to reporters after addressing an MDMK workers’ meeting. Several attempts were being made to break the MDMK, but they would not succeed, he said and claimed that during his meeting with party workers in seventeen districts he found them cheerful. Mr. Vaiko alleged that it was money power that decided the outcome of the Assembly election and felt that the Election Commission should be empowered to withdraw the recognition of any political party found to be indulging in bribing voters.

A law should be enacted to give this power to the ECI. He accused the State government of hoodwinking people, while referring to the closure of 500 TASMAC shops and reducing the timings of sale of liquor. He wanted the government to implement total prohibition as it was the expectation of all sections of people. Mr. Vaiko appealed to the State government to waive all loans of farmers, including the ones obtained from nationalised banks.
