The health department has requested the Medical Council of India to withdraw action initiated against 56 students admitted to Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre.
In a release, the department said the MCI erroneously recommended discharging of 55 students under government quota and one admitted under management quota in the college.
“The department has taken up the matter with the MCI to withdraw the action in respect of 56 Centac-sponsored students and the college has been advised not to discharge these candidates until further order/communication from the MCI. It has appealed to these 56 students and their parents not to panic.
“They should not fall prey to any rumours that may be spread in this regard,” the release said.
In the case of the other 105 students admitted to Sri Manakula Vinayagar Medical College and Hospital, Sri Venkateshwara Medical College Hospital and Research Centre and Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, the department directed the colleges to discharge the candidates as per the MCI direction.
The MCI had issued the direction after it found that the admissions had been done in violation of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 1997.
The council’s directive was based on its assessment that the names of 105 students furnished by the college did not match with the list submitted by the Centac to MCI.
The department had asked the colleges to remove the students from admission roll for 2017-18 and submit a compliance report.
The MCI recommendation had been communicated to the Registrar of Pondicherry University and the Registrar of Tamil Nadu State Medical Council for necessary action, the release added.
