Mayor begins mobilising Rs. 14 lakh to save ailing boy

April 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:40 am IST - TIRUNELVELI:

Mayor E. Bhuvaneshwari has embarked upon the task of mobilising Rs. 14 lakh to meet the medical expenses of a seven-year-old boy suffering from Thalassemia Major, a fatal inherited form of anaemia caused by faulty synthesis of haemoglobin.

As M. Kishore Kumar of Kamarajar Colony in Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai is suffering from this disorder ever since he was 30 months old, his parents took him to Christian Medical College, Vellore, for advanced treatment.

“After several rounds of screening, the doctors of CMC told us to mobilise Rs. 14 lakh for bone marrow transplantation, which is the permanent remedy for this problem. But we, a below poverty line family, cannot mobilise this huge sum. Hence, we approached the Mayor for assistance,” said M. Dhanalakshmi, the boy’s mother.

While the boy’s father Muthu is a painter, Ms. Dhanalakshmi holds a Diploma in Nursing. “But I cannot go for work as I’ve to look after my son, who may swoon anytime due to this disorder,” she also said. When the frail-looking Kishore Kumar, who is repeatedly undergoing blood transfusion, handed over his appeal to Ms. Bhuvaneshwari on Thursday at the Corporation, she assured the inconsolably weeping mother and the boy that she would take all out efforts immediately to help them by persuading the ruling party functionaries, particularly MPs and the MLAs from the district, to pitch in.

“I’ve forwarded this appeal to Amma (former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa) for getting assistance from the State government and will meet our MPs, MLAs and other office-bearers for getting their contribution. I firmly believe that every AIADMK office-bearer and local leader will join hands to save the boy,” Ms. Bhuvaneshwari said.

Meanwhile, Tirunelveli MP K.R.P. Prabhakaran, who came to know about the boy’s health condition, forwarded a letter to the Prime Minister’s Office, which has agreed to release Rs. 3 lakh for treatment.

Those who want to help the boy may contact Ms. Dhanalakshmi at 81240 – 59460 or send their contributions in the form of demand draft or cheque drawn in favour of ‘The Treasurer, Christian Medical College, Vellore, indicating the patient’s name (M. Kishore Kumar) with his hospital number (057412F).
