The day when the Health Minister was inspecting the facilities at the Government Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital in Ooty, another woman, who was delivered of a baby at the hospital, died due to multi-organ failure.

After delivery at the Government Sait Memorial Maternity Hospital a few days ago, Revathy (28) of Elk Hill was being treated at the Government Headquarters Hospital in Ooty. As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.

On Wednesday, she died while being taken to Coimbatore. Officials said the death was caused due to multi-organ failure. It has taken the number of deaths due to such complications to five. She was the third patient to be sent to the CMCH here from Ooty. While one of the earlier two patients died en route on Monday, the other patient died at the CMCH on Tuesday. She was declared 'dead on arrival' at the CMCH.

Her husband Saravanan and other family members staged a protest at the CMCH on Wednesday seeking an inquiry into the initial treatment provided at the Ooty hospital.

Asked whether any compensation would be given to the families of the five women, State Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar remained non-committal.
