A day after filing the FIR against Indian Coast Guard (ICG) personnel for allegedly opening fire on Rameswaram fishermen, the marine police of the Coastal Security Group (CSG) began investigation by visiting the area in the Palk Bay, where the alleged incident took place.

Led by Mr. Ravichandran, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), CSG, Pattukottai, who is in-charge of Ramanathapuram, a team of marine police personnel visited the spot, about 4 nautical miles off Olaikuda, a coastal hamlet near Rameswaram on Wednesday, with the help of GPS.

A. Raja Rajan, Inspector of Police who was heading the special team formed to conduct an inquiry, said that they had obtained the details of the spot from the GPS used by the fishermen who were allegedly shot at by the Coast Guard personnel on Monday.

The Marine police would summon all the six fishermen onboard the trawler, which was checked by the ICG, including the two injured fishermen, he said.

Meanwhile, fishermen, who were witness to the ICG vessel chasing the fishing trawlers, disputed the claim that the ‘Coast Guard vessel 77’ had chased the fishing trawler for about 50 minutes.
