Mango varieties arriving at the Vellore market have started coming down. But the supply, mainly from Andhra Pradesh will continue till June 15, say traders.
The king of fruits has been flooding shops in Vellore for the last two months. However, the arrival of different varieties has been gradually dipping, according to traders.
T.P. Mani, commission merchant, Mango Mundy, said the number of varieties had come down compared to the number to last month.
“Vellore market receives 75% of supply of mangoes from various areas in Andhra Pradesh such as Chittoor, Avalgunda, Nagari and Puthur. The remaining 25% is from areas within Vellore district such as villages in and around Latheri, Kaniyambadi, Kammavanpettai, Vallimalai and Ponnai,” he said. He added the supply of mango varieties is reducing as the area-wise varieties was getting over. “Mango varieties will continue to be supplied from AP for 15 to 20 days. We are getting varieties such as ‘Banganapalli’, ‘Kalapad’ and ‘Athimathuram’ from AP,” Mr. Mani said.
‘Bengalura’ and ‘Neelam’ varieties are also arriving at the Mango Mundy in Vellore. However, the ‘Bengalura’ was mostly supplied to juice factories, he added.
Costliest variety
As of now, the costliest variety of mango is ‘Imampasanth’, he pointed. “A kilo of ‘Imampasanth’ is priced between ₹50 and ₹70. In fact, ‘Imampasanth’ has been ruling the market for the last five years,” he said.
A kilo of ‘Banganapalli’ costs between ₹10 and ₹20, ‘Kalapad’ is selling at ₹10-25, depending on the size. ‘Athimathuram’ is selling at ₹15-30, while ‘Malgova’ is fetches between ₹20 and ₹30, Mr. Mani said.
