A 65-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant at Denkanikottai during the early hours of Sunday. The victim M. Giriappa, a farmer of Bommusettipatti, had stayed the night at Anjanapalli, where he had gone for a bereavement.

According to sources, Giriappa had left for Bommusettipatti during the early hours of Sunday. Since the path ahead was not visible due to heavy fog, he reportedly ran into an elephant that killed him.

The forest department is slated to provide the preliminary compensation of Rs.25,000 towards funeral expenses on Monday.
