Man ‘offers’ his tongue for India’s victory

March 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:45 am IST - VELLORE:

Thursday was a big day for die-hard cricket fans. But for the family of 27-year-old Sudhakar, the day started off with a shock. The youth reportedly cut his tongue and offered it at a temple praying for the country’s victory in the semi-final match against Australia. However, police said that he had injured his tongue after an accidental fall from a tree.

Relatives of Sudhakar, a resident of Mittanangkuppam near Ponneri, said he was a die-hard fan of cricket. “On Thursday morning, he had gone to Vediyappan temple near Ponneri and made an offering of his tongue praying for India’s victory in the World Cup match,” claimed Bhoopalan, a relative.

According to his family he had done this for the sake of the game. Sudhakar was admitted to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital, Adukkamparai. Doctors at the hospital said that initially he had told them that he had climbed a papaya tree by holding a knife in his mouth. His tongue had cut after he accidentally fell from the tree.

“However, after sometime, his friend told us that he was a cricket fan and cut his tongue praying for the country’s victory. The cut is deep. We have administered stitches and will have to wait and see,” a senior doctor said.

Police attached to Jolarpet station said they had received intimation regarding the incident.
