In a case of fratricide, a man allegedly murdered his younger brother, who was visually impaired, locomotor disabled and mentally unbalanced, claiming it was a mercy killing to free him of all his agonies.

K. Sivanandam (30) had the physical and mental problems since birth. After his mother died about 20 years ago, he had been under the care of his father Karthikaisamy (59), aunt and brother Kannan (37) at Perungulam near Uchipulli.

Police said the deceased was confined to a hut behind the house and lived in a pathetic condition. Mr. Karthikaisamy was away to attend to a marriage function on Monday night, when Kannan hit Sivanandam with a wooden log and slit his throat “seeking to end his sufferings”.

Confessing to the killing, Kannan told the police that he ended his brother’s life to give him eternal peace and free him of all his agonies since he could not bear his sufferings.

Uchipulli police arrested Kannan, a daily wage worker. He was produced before a local magistrate court and remanded in judicial custody, the police said.
