Man jailed for bid to rape 80-year-old

Thoothukudi Fast Track Mahila Court Judge J. Flora on Tuesday sentenced a man who was accused of attempting to rape an 80-year-old woman to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment.

According to prosecution, S. Murugan (50), a casual labourer from Vedhakovil North Street in Rajapudukudi, attempted to rape the old woman after trespassing into her house on October 7, 2013. Kayathar police had registered case in this regard. The accused was found guilty under Sections 376 and 511 of the Indian Penal Code, for which the judge sentenced him to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 2,000 on him. He was also found guilty under Section 450 (trespassing) of the IPC, and under the count the judge sentenced him to undergo two years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped him with a fine of Rs. 1,000. However, the sentences would run concurrently.
