The police arrested a 40-year-old man for chopping the fingers and the hand of a woman in Gummidipoondi on Saturday. The police said he resorted to the the crime as the woman’s husband was having an affair with his wife.

According to the police, Shankar, 40, a driver in a private company is married to Sathya and the couple have two children. They reside in Selliamman Nagar in Gummidipoondi.

Sheik, 35, a tailor, and his wife Shakila, 28, too live in the locality.

Sathya and Sheik were allegedly having an affair for two years. “Shankar had warned his wife. On March 15, he got furious on seeing them together,” said a senior police officer. On Saturday, Shankar confronted Shakila in a drunken state.

“He took out a knife and cut her right hand and four fingers of her left hand before fleeing,” said a police officer. Shankar was nabbed in the evening. Shakila is recuperating in the hospital.
