Man gets double life term for murder

Mahila Court Judge Vijayakumari on Tuesday sentenced Murugan (32) to double life imprisonment for murdering a woman and her child in 2011.

P. Kannan (34) of Perumapalayam in Vazhapadi was married to Gayatri (24) and had two children. It was said that Gayatri had illicit relationship with Murugan of Attur and Kannan warned them. Angered by it, Gayatri was staying at her parent’s house in Ammapet with two children.

It was said that Gayatri gave 10 sovereign gold jewellery to Murugan and both were living together with her children. An altercation broke between them when Gayatri asked Murguan to return the jewellery. On November 6, 2011, Murugan doused kerosene over Gayatri and her one-and-half-year old child Dharanipriya and set them on fire. While the child died on the spot, Gayatri died at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. Based on her statement, the police registered a murder case and arrested Murugan. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000. The judge ordered Rs. 15,000 of the fine amount to be paid to Kannan. Later, Murugan was lodged at the prison.
