A 50-year-old man committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday while his wife and teenager son, who also consumed poison, are battling for life at Tenkasi Government Hospital.

Police said Kanakkan (50), a labourer from Kallampuli under Sernthamaram police limits, his wife K. Sooryagandhi (47) and son K. Sudalaikani (15), a class X student, were found unconscious in their house on Thursday morning after they allegedly consumed poison. They were rushed to the hospital. Kanakkan died on the way to the hospital, where Sooryagandhi and Sudalaikani, who are in a serious condition, are undergoing treatment.

The police found that Sudalaikani was reportedly suffering from kidney ailment and was under treatment. For the past few days, he was also suffering from fever. He had to write SSCL examination that started on Thursday.

Upset over this, Kanakkan might have administered poison to Sooryagandhi and Sudalaikani and consumed poison himself.
