The All Women Police in Ambur sub-division have booked a 50-year-old man under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for reportedly trying to sexually abuse a six-year-old girl with speech impairment.

According to the police, the girl was returning from a wedding along with her grandmother on Monday evening.

While her grandmother had stopped for a while on the way, the girl proceeded towards her aunt’s house.

The man, Palani, had offered biscuits to the girl, and took her to a desolate spot in a coconut grove. The girl’s grandmother, on finding her missing, called out to her. She heard the girl screaming and spotted the man fleeing from the spot.

Villagers reportedly roughed up the man, and he sustained injuries. A complaint was lodged at the All Women Police Station, Ambur against the man. A case was registered under sections 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) under Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act.

The police said Palani was hospitalised for treatment of his injuries. Meanwhile, as the girl had speech impairment, the police have sent a requisition to a school for the hearing and speech impaired in Ambur to send a teacher to help in interpretation. Police said they will be able to conduct an inquiry once they get to know what happened from the girl.
