A demand for a legislation that makes it mandatory for women aged below 21 years to get the consent of their parents while opting for a love marriage figured among the resolutions passed at a meeting of Anaiythu Samuthaya Periyyakam, under the chairmanship of Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S.Ramadoss, here on Monday.
Attended by representatives of 40 caste organisations, the State-level meeting of the confederation reasoned in support of legislation, as many young women from affluent families in the State fell prey to youths who pretending to be in love, sought to exploit them and their parents, according to organisers of the meeting.
The confederation, the resolution said, had already declared that it was not against women above 21 years marrying men of their choice.
To a query from presspersons, Dr.Ramadoss said the marriageable age of a woman should be raised from 18 years to 21 years as hormonal imbalance in teenage was high, resulting in rash decisions. At 21, they become mature enough to take important decisions and many of them complete graduation.
Other resolutions passed at the meeting included amendment to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 to prevent its misuse, besides a demand for a compartmental reservation policy. At the meeting fiery speeches in support of measures to protect the interest of Vanniyars and impassionate plea for contesting the forthcoming general elections were made.
PMK president G.K.Mani said the confederation, formed in 2012, held meetings throughout the State.
