A major fire broke out in the godown of a private spinning mill at Kalaignar Nagar in Karungalpalayam area here on Monday morning. No casualty was reported, but machineries, yarn and other goods worth several lakhs of rupees were destroyed in the fire accident.

Witnesses said the labourers noticed flames engulfing a part of the godown around 6 a.m. and alerted the Fire and Rescue Services personnel in Erode. The godown was used to store mixed cotton, yarn and other materials.

Before the fire-fighters arrived at the spot, flames spread to other parts of the godown quickly and engulfed the whole building.

Three fire engines were pressed into service initially. Later, two more fire engines from Bhavani and Perundurai were also called to control the blaze.

A number of private water tankers were also used for controlling the fire. Fire-fighters managed to put out the flames after struggling for more than four hours.

Fire service personnel said that the cause of the fire was not yet known. “We are yet to ascertain the financial loss caused by the fire,” Divisional Officer, Fire and Rescue Services, M. Kannan said.
