In a major fillip to school education, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced measures for opening new primary schools, upgrading primary schools to middle schools, middle schools to high schools and high schools to higher secondary schools, construction of classrooms and appointment of teachers.

The Chief Minister told the Assembly that tenth grade, Plus One and Plus Two students in all government and government-aided schools would each get a school diary with calendar, a first of its kind. The project cost was Rs. 3 crore.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said her government had identified 128 places inhabited mostly by SC/ST population for starting primary schools. Each school would have a headmaster and a secondary grade teacher and other facilities. The total cost of the scheme was Rs. 19.43 crore per year.

To ensure that there should be a middle school for every three km, the government would upgrade 42 schools to middle schools. It would cost over Rs. 9 crore and each school would have three graduate teachers. Likewise, 50 government middle schools would be elevated to high schools. A total of 300 teachers would be appointed for these schools.

The Chief Minister said 100 high schools run by the government, corporation and municipalities, would be upgraded to higher secondary schools. Each school would get a postgraduate headmaster and nine postgraduate teachers. This would cost the government Rs. 31.82 crore per annum.

Ms. Jayalalithaa said the amount for implementing the assistance scheme to meet the educational expenses of the children whose earning parents had died, would be hiked from Rs. 50,000 to Rs 75,000.
