Magisterial probe under way into death of suspect

June 18, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:06 pm IST - KRISHNAGIRI:

A magisterial inquiry got under way on Friday in connection with the death of Moorthy alias Bhujji, the prime accused in the case relating to the murder of a police head constable during a chain snatching attempt in Hosur on Wednesday.

Moorthy was caught by the police after he, along with three of his accomplices, attacked a police team that had tailed the gang after a chain-snatching incident in Hosur on Wednesday evening. One of the policemen succumbed to injuries from the assault in the small hours of Thursday.

The magisterial inquiry under Section 176 was conducted by Judicial Magistrate Shanti here, a day after the pre-dawn custodial death of the 19-year-old accused Moorthy.

Moorthy allegedly died of chest pain after he was whisked away to Bengaluru to identify the whereabouts of the fellow accused in the attack.

Superintendent of Police Bandi Gangadhar told The Hindu that five special teams were formed to comb the neighbouring States for the remaining three accused. However, the names of the three were not disclosed fearing for their safety.

“It’s a sensitive case, and it’s safe not to disclose the names of the accused for their own safety. However, we are positive of their arrests shortly,” the SP said. On Thursday night, the body of Moorthy was handed over to his family after the autopsy at Hosur government hospital.

On the other hand, sub inspector Nagaraj was still under observation at a private hospital in Hosur, where he underwent two critical abdominal surgeries for deep stab injuries.
