About 20 tmcft of water drained into the sea due to snag in four shutters at Lower Anicut

The members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, led by K. Balakrishnan, MLA, observed a fast here on Thursday urging the State government to take action against Public Works Department officials whose “callousness” had caused the wastage of about 20 tmc ft as the sluice gates of the Lower Anicut developed snag.

As the water could not be damned, it simply drained through the Kollidam into the sea.

Even now the seepage of water continues from the Lower Anicut through two of the shutters that could not be fully closed, farmers charged. While about 70,000 acres in the tail-end delta region of Chidambaram, Kattumannarkoil, Bhuvanagiri and Parangipettai were languishing for water and the residents were facing severe drinking water shortage, the PWD officials were keen only on drawing water from the Veeranam tank for Chennai, they said.

Mr. Balakrishnan said that such an action on the part of the PWD officials was tantamount to reneging on the earlier promise that the Veeranam water would be tapped for Chennai only after giving priority to the requirements of the local ayacutdars and the residents.
