A low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal was likely to bring in more rains to coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, meteorological officials said.

“A low pressure area has formed over west central and adjoining South West bay off south Andhra Pradesh and North Tamil Nadu coast. Under its influence, heavy rain is expected to occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 48 hours, starting 8.30 am today,” a Met official said.

Fishermen have been warned not to venture out to sea as strong north-westerly winds, with speeds of between 45-55 kmph are likely along off North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

South Tamil Nadu coast was also likely to experience strong winds from the Westerly direction with speeds occasionally reaching 45-55 kmph, the officials said.

Ponneri in Tiruvallur district registered the maximum amount of rainfall at 18 cm, followed by 14 cm at Cholavaram in the district.

The officials said the sky over Chennai may be generally cloudy, with rain or thundershowers in some areas. The maximum temperature might be around 34 degrees Celsius, they said.
