The Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners’ Federation has opposed the new system of establishing common stockyards for sand, stating that it would amount to “second sales” and lead to cost escalation.
Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners’ Federation president Sella. Rajamani on Monday appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to withdraw the move.
This would affect the common man, turn transport of sand unviable for 50,000 lorry owners and render nearly one lakh drivers jobless.
A stockyard was established in Erode district, and other districts were following suit.
Instead, steps should be taken to increase the number of quarries to ensure that every lorry got a load of sand every day, Mr. Sella. Rajamani said.
