A lone tusker spotted by a driver near the Synagunda-Mordhana Road is being monitored by the Forest department officials.

A driver of a private school van spotted the elephant when he was taking students to school on Monday morning.

Crackers burst

According to Forest Department officials, the tusker, which usually moves from Andhra Pradesh forests to the adjoining forests in Vellore district, was spotted near a bush along Synagunda-Mordhana Road at 8.35 a.m.

“A school van was passing by when the driver spotted the elephant. The tusker did not enter the road. However, four of our personnel, who were involved in creating a pathway, were near the spot. They burst crackers and drove the tusker into the forest. The school van left the spot safely,” an officer attached to the Gudiyatham Forest Range said.

The area where the tusker was spotted falls in between the reserve forest areas of Mordhana and Synagunda, he said, adding that they have been continuously monitoring the movement of the elephant and the personnel were also involved in night patrolling.

“This tusker moves from the Koundinya sanctuary of Andhra Pradesh to the adjoining forest areas in Vellore, and keeps wandering from place to place. It is aged at least 60 to 65 years and does not join with other elephants. Sometimes, it moves fast and at times, it stands in a spot,” he said,

The officer said they would continue to monitor the movement of the tusker.
