Local cable TV channels functioning illegally: DMK

May 08, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - NAMAKKAL:

The district unit of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has lodged complaint with the election official that local cable televisions are functioning even after their contract period ended in April.

In a petition submitted to District Election Officer and Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy, urban district in-charge for the party’s lawyers wing M. Ramesh said that the contract period of all local cable television channels ended in April.

But they continue to function illegally, he said.

The petition said that Tamil Nadu Cable TV Corporation did not call for tender for renewing the licence or extending the contract period.

“The functioning of these local channels is illegal and their operations should be stopped immediately,” he demanded.

He said that a particular channel had obtained permission for relaying only in the town, but continues to telecast across the district.

“The channel acts illegally after undue pressure was exerted on it by the AIADMK. It is a big revenue loss to the State government,” he added.

The petition also said that channels that support DMK were not telecasted across the district and the same has been taken to the knowledge of the district administration on March 8. But no action has been taken so far, he said.
