Local bodies asked to settle dues to Tangedco

Collector directs officials to seek disconnection for unused borewells

Vellore District Collector R. Nanthagopal has directed the Assistant Director of Village Panchayats and the Assistant Director of Town Panchayats to take steps to ensure that the village and town panchayats settled the mounting dues which they owed to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco). He asked the Commissioner of Vellore Corporation to immediately settle the dues of Rs.6.55 crores which it owed to the Tangedco for power consumption.

Presiding over a meeting conducted at the Collectorate here on Tuesday to review the steps taken by the various government departments and local bodies to pay the arrears of various amounts which it owned to the Tangedco and various government departments for the services rendered by them, Mr. Nanthagopal also asked the local bodies to seek disconnection of power supply to unused borewells to help reduce their financial burden.

Forest department

The Collector asked the forest department to issue a no-objection certificate required to facilitate the Alangayam Town Panchayat to commence work on an underground sewerage scheme in the Pethur village.

Mr. Nanthagopal asked the Regional Director of Municipal Administration to monitor the prompt payment of library cess which the municipalities owed to the District Central Library, Vellore. It was noted that the Vaniyambadi Municipality has not paid the cess dues despite repeated reminders. He asked the District Library Officer to determine the library cess demand pertaining to various local bodies. It was stated on behalf of the Vellore Corporation that the current due of Rs.1.26 crores to the District Central Library would be paid in the next financial year.

The Corporation owed a total sum of Rs.3.26 cores to the District Library.

The Collector asked the Special Tahsildar (Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees) to expedite the work on the construction of houses in the Sri Lankan Tamil Refugees Camp in Melmonavoor in Vellore. It was noted that out of the 52 houses to be constructed, 75 per cent of the work has been completed in 14 houses, and 10 houses have come up to the lintel level, while preliminary works have been completed in respect of the remaining 28 houses.

Mr. Nanthagopal wanted the Vellore Corporation, the various municipalities, and town and village panchayats to take steps to remove unauthorised digital banners and advertisement hoardings. In respect of the approved banners and hoardings, he wanted the local body officials to ensure that they were not retained beyond the stipulated period.
