On February 27, the Madras High Court will be hearing the final arguments in a two-decade-old case filed by the CBI against AIADMK interim general secretary V.K. Sasikala’s husband M. Natarajan, for duty evasion while importing a luxury car from the United Kingdom.
The issue pertains to the import of a Lexus car in 1994, declaring it as a used vehicle. The CBI and Enforcement Directorate had registered separate cases against Mr. Natarajan and three others after it was found that the documents presented by them were fabricated, allegedly causing a duty loss of more than Rs. one crore to the exchequer.
Mr. Natarajan and three others were convicted and sentenced to two years in jail by a CBI court in 2010. However, the sentence was suspended as Mr. Natarajan moved an appeal assailing the order in the High Court.
On Monday when the appeal came up for hearing before Justice S. Bhaskaran, he posted the plea to February 27 final arguments.
