The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, promoted by the Left parties, has called a bandh in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam for Thursday.

The farmers will stage an agitation to protest Karnataka’s plan to build dams across the Cauvery at Mekedatu, condemn the Centre’s silence on the issue and urge the State government to convene an all-party meeting.

The farmers’ organisations have also demanded that the Centre constitute the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Monitoring Committee expeditiously for proper sharing of water under the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

The DMK, the DMDK, the Congress, the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar), the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi have supported the bandh call.

Sangam Tiruvarur district secretary Masilamani said that the MLAs from the delta districts had planned to take part in the protest. However, as the Assembly sessions begins on Thursday, they would raise the issue in the House.

Earlier, the Sangam had called a bandh on November 29, but put it off because of the continuous rains.

The police have made elaborate security arrangements.
