Left parties rule out ties with DMK

Rejecting the assumption that they may go with the DMK in the wake of its leader M. Karunanidhi’s declaration that his party would not ally either with the Congress or the BJP, the two left parties made it clear that they were not for an alliance with the DMK.

Leaders of the Left parties said they were forging an alliance alternative to both the Congress and the BJP at the national level and in Tamil Nadu their present arrangement with the AIADMK would continue in the Lok Sabha polls.

“The DMK was part of the Congress-led UPA at the Centre and party to the neo-liberal economic policies pursued by it. We cannot join hands with a party that supported foreign direct investment in retail sector and other anti-people measures,” said CPI (M) state secretary G. Ramakrishnan. He said even after quitting the UPA government, the DMK supported the Food Security Bill and the Pension Bill. “The Congress-DMK combine presided over an unprecedented corrupt regime. The 2G spectrum scam and the Colgate scam bear testimony to scams and corruption,” said Mr. Ramakrishnan.

Justifying his party's decision to continue the ties with the AIADMK, CPI assistant secretary C. Mahendran said of all governments in the country only the AIADMK regime consistently opposed the anti-people policies of the Centre.
