Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan on Monday demanded an impartial inquiry into the attack on three Dalit colonies in the district on November 7.
After visiting the colonies and speaking to the affected Dalits, he alleged that people belonging to various political parties were part of the mob that carried out the attack. Police investigation was on the right track, but there should not be any political interference, he told reporters.
Mr. Thirumavalavan demanded that the Election Commission of India ban parties pursuing caste-based politics.
Communist Party of India leader R. Nallakkannu said that the government should appoint a commission headed by a serving Judge to inquire into the attack.
After visiting the affected colonies on Sunday, he told reporters here on Monday that it was a clear case of caste Hindus attempting to weaken Dalit families trying to rise economically.
Political parties should shun caste-based politics, as caste and politics were different. Political parties had raised their voices against the attack on Tamils in Sri Lanka, but people within Tamil Nadu were fighting each other on caste lines, he lamented. Inter-caste marriages should not be used by one community to target the other.
