As many as 110 lawyers were arrested for trying to block trains at the Town Railway Station here on Wednesday.

When the Salem – Virudhachalam Passenger arrived at the station at around 9.50 a.m. lawyers jumped in front of the train, and demanded that the amendments made to the Advocates Act, 1961 be withdrawn.

They raised slogans that the protest will continue till the amendments were withdrawn. Over 75 lawyers staged a protest outside the Namakkal Railway Station.

The lawyers were on an indefinite strike for the last three weeks.

Amendments

The amendments were recently made by the Madras High Court that empowers courts to debar erring lawyers from practice either temporarily or permanently by exercising powers conferred on the court under Section 34 (1) of the Advocates Act, 1961.
