The filing of charge sheet by the CBI in the case relating to the police-lawyers clash on the High Court campus on February 19 last year has evoked protests from lawyers.
The joint action committee of advocates’ associations has decided to meet on January 18 to decide future course of action.
Presidents of the Madras High Court Advocates Association and the Tamil Nadu Advocates Association, R.C. Paul Kanagaraj and S. Prabakaran, said the investigation by the Central agency was “not proper.” The charge sheet ran counter to the High Court judgment. The Magistrate should not accept it.
Mr. Prabakaran said the CBI had “targeted the legal profession.”
Mr. Kanagaraj said prima facie it had been established that the charge sheet was one-sided.
The charge sheet has been filed against 31 advocates and about 10 police personnel and a law college student. It has recommended departmental action against nearly 20 police personnel.
In its order on October 29 last year on petitions relating to the incidents, a Division Bench, comprising Justices F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla and R. Banumathi, had directed the CBI, which is investigating two cases, one against the police and the other against lawyers, to proceed with the investigation expeditiously and file the final report within three months.
