PMK founder S. Ramadoss on Saturday said the Centre should pass an ordinance to ensure that government doctors working in remote areas in Tamil Nadu continued to get reservations in postgraduate admissions. The Centre’s dependence on the AIADMK for the Presidential election must be exploited to pass this ordinance.
In a statement, Dr. Ramadoss said that when the State government appealed against the Madras High Court order in April, the court said that doctors working in rural and mountainous regions would continue to have reservation privilege. The government made all primary health centres as ‘rural, remote and mountainous regions’ to continue giving doctors reservation. This meant that out of 1,066 seats, 999 doctors got seats, he said
“Now, the court itself has identified rural and mountainous regions because of which many of the students might lose their seats. We cannot fault the State government fully as they were trying to bypass the High Court’s order striking down reservations for government doctors working in rural areas. The only solution is an ordinance,” he said.
