The road, riddled with potholes, was crying for attention for many years.

Kundrathur Main Road, which connects the city corporation’s extended areas with several growing suburban residential localities, finally will get a makeover. The road connects Porur on Mount Poonamallee Road with Kollacheri near Kundrathur.

State Highways Department has been constructing stormwater drains to a distance of 2.7 km from Gerugambakkam to Madhanandapuram. The road, which was narrow and riddled with potholes, was crying for attention for many years now. The project includes construction of stormwater drains on either side, laying of roads to the maximum width and footpaths. The entire project is expected to be completed in three months.

These works are expected to ease traffic flow on the road. While the Porur-Madhanandapuram section is handled by Tiruvallur district, the remaining portion comes under the jurisdiction of Kancheepuram district.

A trader from Madhanandapuram, M. Manoharan, said areas along Kundrathur Main Road have been witnessing an increase in population, all of a sudden, owing to massive residential projects that are on in Madhanandapuram, Moulivakkam, Mugalivakkam, Moondram Kattalai, Thandalam, Gerugambakkam, Kovur and Periyapanicheri, in addition to Kundrathur.

Residents living in the area wanted the road to be made into to a four-lane road and re-laid. Several government and private schools, technical institutions are located along the road, which is prone to damage during monsoon.

Officials of the State Highways Department said widening of the road involved land acquisition at prohibitively high costs. Hence, it was decided to pave the road wherever possible and construct stormwater drains, which is an integral part of road development.
