The Kumbakonam Town Branch Public Library is situated behind the famous Yanaiadi Elementary School where the former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran started his educational journey. This library was established on 1952. More than 1,000 readers were using this library every day. Students and those preparing for competitive exam use the library. More than 5,000 books on various subjects are available. But all the valuable books, journals, and newspapers are damaged because of lack of infrastructure. As the ceiling of the library building leaks, the books get wet. This also drenches the chairs leaving visitors with no place to sit. The library is functioning in a portion of Kumbakonam Municipal Dispensary building on rent. The Department of Public Libraries should provide adequate amenities to readers and visitors.

Increase awareness

on hygiene

Proper draining of water, hand washing, consuming hygienic food and water and keeping our environment clean are steps that we should take to protect ourselves from monsoon diseases such as malaria, dengue, typhoid, jaundice, cholera, and viral fever. Medical expenses are high and unaffordable to common people. I request the government and voluntary organisations to sensitise people to these simple measures to prevent spread of monsoon diseases.

No improvement

Although Thanjavur has been upgraded to a corporation, the condition of the roads in the town is very poor. Nanjikottai Road is a case in point. This despite it being re-laid recently. I request the authorities concerned to remove encroachments and widen the road.

A.S. Krishnamoorthy,

Thanjavur

Road ruined

Two roads laid recently at a cost of Rs. 17 lakh at Annai Anjugamnagar have been completely ruined because of recent rain. They should be re-laid again.

Yet another

monsoon wasted

We waste precious rainwater year after year. Despite bountiful rainfall what we saw was destruction of life and property this year. A city like Chennai, which faced an unprecedented scarcity of drinking water only a few days ago, is inundated. Many other districts of the state were affected severely. Indiscriminate development of housing layouts, lack of storm-water drains, and clogging of channels were the chief reasons for the damage. The Government's apathy towards dredging lakes and water bodies allowed the rainwater go waste.

Post operator

at escalator

The escalator likely to be commissioned in the Platform 2 and 3 in Tiruchi Railway Junction soon will be a boon to senior citizens and the passengers who carry heavy luggage. As this escalator is meant only for climbing up, it is going to pose a problem of congestion at the steps on the Madurai side as and when a train arrives on platform 2 or 3 because the escalator on the Chennai side is not meant for climbing down. Since the time the escalator erection work was taken up, the Chennai side stairs were kept closed for the past six months putting passengers to great inconvenience as they had to use the steps on the Madurai side to climb down to the subway. It is advisable to post an operator near the escalator for the safety of the passengers who are not used to such facilities.

Provide toilets in

passenger train

At present, a passenger train (76851 and 76852) runs between Karaikal and Tiruchi. The train doesn’t have toilet. Commuters are mostly office-goers who travel to Tiruchi from Karaikal. Many are diabetics and face untold misery since the running time of the train is more than 5 hours. Apart from this, the upward train is being held up Saliamangalam most days for about 30 minutes to 1 hour for crossing of express and goods trains. The train is being halted at the outer of Thanjavur Junction on most days for one reason or other. Saliamangalam Station head refuses to give Complaints book. I appeal to authorities concerned to do the needful.

Karur bypass

badly damaged

The Karur bypass is severely damaged with dangerous pits. The road connects Woraiyur, Combined Court Complex, and Mainguard Gate.

Two-wheeler riders meet with accidents. Both sides of the road are occupied by mini vans, cars, and other vehicles. The road connecting the Karur highway is damaged. I request the authorities to take re-lay the road.

Cut fuel price

As crude price decreased in the world market, the oil marketing companies here have increased the petrol and diesel prices instead of reducing them. Service tax has been increased. The Centre and the oil marketing companies should reconsider their decision.

Let us wake up

to the calamity

Relief work is taken up on war-footing when water-logging happens as in the case of recent rain in Tamil Nadu. But we do not want to do anything to prevent water-logging. Will political parties work for this instead of blaming one another. Even NGOs and corporate sector can chip in. Something has to be done in a smaller way to give a big impact on all such issues.
