Court asks govt to provide succour to injured children

The Principal District and Sessions Court has asked the State government to consider providing succour to the 18 children who sustained injuries in the Kumbakonam school fire in 2004.

Delivering the verdict on Wednesday, the Principal District and Sessions Judge Mohamed Ali said the State government should consider providing succour to the children taking into account the sufferings undergone by them as well as keeping in mind their welfare.

Fifteen children sustained grievous injuries, while three others sustained simple injuries in the horrific incident which raised serious questions about safety in schools.

Many student survivors along with their parents and near ones from Kumbakonam and its outskirts waited patiently outside the District and Sessions Court to hear the verdict in the case.

When the case was taken up for pronouncing the verdict at around 11 15 a.m., the court at first announced the names of the 11 accused and acquitted all of them. The names of the 10 convicted persons were then announced. The police had named in all 21 accused in the case.

At around 1.25 p.m., the Judge delivered the quantum of sentence for those convicted. The first to be pronounced was that of the prime accused ‘Pulavar’ Palanisamy – the school founder.
