Kudankulam reactor turbine synchronised with grid again

The Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project’s first reactor turbine, which was stopped on December 2 for a range of tests, was synchronised again with the southern grid shortly after Tuesday noon.

“The turbine was synchronised with the grid at 12.12 p.m. and it generated over 240 MWe within 20 minutes of synchronisation,” confirmed Site Director of KKNPP R.S. Sundar. The power generation in the first reactor would be stabilised at 400 MWe and enhanced to 500 MWe before December third week after obtaining permission from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB).

“Before attaining 500 MWe, we will get the Board’s nod once again to take the 1,000 MWe reactor’s generation capacity to 50 per cent,” Mr. Sundar said.

The reactor was restarted on Sunday at 5.11 p.m. and was functioning well by generating heat as planned.

Sources in the plant said experts of the AERB would hold talks with their Russian counterparts “on a range of issues” in Kanyakumari on Wednesday (December 11).

A team of Russian scientists, which reached Thiruvananthapuram airport on Tuesday, came to Kanyakumari by road amidst tight security.
