After a slew of mandatory tests, the turbine of the first reactor of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project was resynchronised with the southern grid on Saturday afternoon.
The first reactor and the turbine were halted on January 29 for conducting the tests, usually done before generation reaches 750 MWe in a 1,000-MWe VVER reactor. As the outcome of the tests was satisfactory, the reactor and the turbine were resynchronised with the grid at 1.03 p.m., with the approval of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. “Since the AERB has given its approval for taking generation to 750 MWe, we hope to reach the milestone within the next 72 hours or so,” said R.S. Sundar, Site Director, KKNPP.
