Work at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) was not affected in the wake of massive earthquake in Indonesia triggering fears of a tsunami though the plant is “generally on alert,” a top official said on Wednesday.
“We received the alert from Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services in Hyderabad and we are generally on alert. But our work is continuing,” M. Kasinath Balaji, Site Director, Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, told PTI.
He said the walls of KNPP are 7.5 metre-high and the plant itself is situated on a raised platform.
Work at the plant started recently after several months of protests by anti-nuclear activists stalling the commissioning of its first unit.

As literates it only makes sense to either read the facts about nuclear energy before we make our own conclusions or it is better to follow the leaders who are proven, in case of nuclear technology, not all of us are aware of what is in the plants and how they work. Atleast try to believe what Mr. Kalam had advised, i don't think he has given any adverse comments. This is not about corruption in starting it, it is about the corruption that took decades to build this plant. we get only few projects on time that are useful to the people of the nation, please don't spread negative sentiments by spreading baseless facts.
Dunces, 5 hours power cut everyday in chennai and still you chaps talk of anti nuclear stuff. can you produce electricty with your gobar gas? think just once (atleast) before commenting. would you call Dr Abdul kalam corrupt too? (he said that koodankulam is safer than the roads in which indians commute). Think positive and be optimistic. otherwise, go back to dark ages. Stop using your computer and use the old leaves to write scriptures.
KKNP is very much located on the beach!!! Just google 'koodankulam' you will know.
These two great earthquakes were caused by a surge of bending moments unleashed by the dams of the world of about 6500x10^19.05 Newtonmeters. All this water surge moment immediately after the quakes will be transferred to other fulcra in the 'vicinity' all round the centres of gravities of the clusters of dams. Thus such a ball park surge may come to be applied at Kalpakkam and Kudankulam. Thus this surge may not cause such a huge earthquake at these nuke stations but the jolt would be enough to melt the rocks underneath or heat up the rocks due to changes in total dam contents resulting in an explosive fire in the complex, leading to loss of coolant and nuclear explosion. Google for 'Glaring Lacuna in meeting water needs' and see how Fukushima received such a huge jolt but much higher(9 MM) and exploded.I place this before the people for study and as an aid in understanding the possibilities created by the dynamics of dams in creating massive earthquakes and associated friction, fires.
If they stop Rs 14,000 crore will be spoiled. The congress govt
is ready to lose Rs 1.76 LAKH CRORE on 2G SPECTRUM SCAM alone and
still the list of scams continues... 25 LAKH CRORE black money,
Cmmonwealth scam, Adarsh scam, etc. etc.
But for the Manmohan Govt considers Rs 14,000 crore as a huge
amount. Former Director of AEC, MR Srinivasan says," Koodankulam
is not in the earthquake prone area". One question to all the
neuclear power lovers- whether they are common men, political
leaders or scientists-Did anybody predict this earthquake which
caused tremors in India? How did M R Srinivasan assume that
Koodankulam is not in the quake prone area?
The govts that do not have any concern for human lives is adamant
in commissioning KKNP. Nature only will teach you all a lesson!
Public relations alone is not guarantee to protection against disaster.
The tremors forewarn the future. Take heed!
By the way, why is Thorium not the fuel of choice. I understand India has
pioneered its usage.
Now it might be a prestige issue! If work is suspended at KKNP,
then the congress govt may think that they are defeated before
the villagers. So the Congress govt and AIDMK govt also don't
bother about these earthquakes.
Former chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of IndiaSrinivasan
said that one should never compare the Fukushima plant with
Kudankulam and added "The Fukushima plant was built on a
beachfront, but the Kudankulam was constructed on a solid terrain
and that too keeping all the safety aspects in mind. Also, we are
not in a tsunami prone area. The plants in Kudankulam have a
double containment system which can withstand high pressure. At
least Rs 14,000 crore has been spent. If we don't operate the
plant immediately, it will affect the economic stability of our
country"
So these corrupt govts will commission KKNP even if an earthquake
of magnitude of 99.9 Richter Scale occurs!
Long live Indian corrupt govts!
Considering the tsunami and earthquare effects on Japan and the way the whole world is now a bit more concerned about the n-plant , shouldnt we a little more caution in building more n-powered plants??
If discarding it half way through would result in financial issues, would it be more that that we would heve to spend in case of a tsunami initiated nuclear disaster??
