Tirunelveli District Collector R. Selvaraj has said that the clamping of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of Cr. P. C. on the entire Radhapuram taluk in the wake of the protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project, will not have an impact on contract workers returning for duty at the project site after nearly five-and-a-half months.
With prohibitory orders promulgated, the contract labourers, who had to leave the place after the anti-nuclear protests gained momentum, are reluctant to return fearing they would be arrested if they moved around en masse before and after working hours.
When the apprehension was raised with the Collector, Dr. Selvaraj told The Hindu that their security would be ensured.
The district administration did not want any unlawful activity and hence had imposed the prohibitory orders.
“However, the contract labourers can return to Kudankulam and work for the early completion of KKNPP.”
