The police arrested a cousin of doctor N. Rajesh, 26, who was found dead in the water tank of his house in Poompuhar Nagar, Kolathur, on Friday.

The man, whose marriage had been fixed for Monday, was found dead when his parents were away distributing invitation cards. Investigation revealed that the murder was committed by the doctor’s cousin R. Mahendran, who lives nearby.

A special team arrested him at a house near Villivakkam railway station, where he was hiding, on Sunday. Confessing to the murder, he said Rajesh had repeatedly abused him for a financial loss incurred by his family.

A senior officer said the accused and the victim had a drink on Thursday and a verbal duel followed. Mahendran killed Rajesh, dumped the body in the water tank and escaped.
