KKNPP site director elevated as Outstanding Scientist

Site director of Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), R.S. Sundar, who has gained 30 years of experience in operating nuclear reactors, and Project Director, KKNPP (Units 3 and 4) R. Banerjee, have been promoted as Outstanding Scientists by the Department of Atomic Energy.

After obtaining bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Coimbatore Institute of Technology, Mr. Sundar joined the Department of Atomic Energy in 1980 and underwent a year-long training at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, before being posted at Tarapur Atomic Power Station where he served for more than 20 years in various capacities to gain experience in operation and maintenance of nuclear power projects, design review plant upgrading and updated safety norms.

Subsequently, Mr. Sundar was posted at the headquarters in Mumbai as Additional Chief Engineer.

He was the team leader for training on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project’s VVER reactors at Russia for nearly one year and established a comprehensive training program of VVERs.

On returning home, he was posted as Technical Services Superintendent at KKNPP in 2004. Subsequently, he was elevated to the post of Station Director in 2010.
