Kin of sixteen fishermen who went missing and died in mid-sea were given welfare assistance under the Fishermen Group Insurance scheme and also the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund here on Saturday.
Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan handed over the cheques to the immediate relatives of the fishermen families in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP and AIADMK District Secretary A. Vijaykumar at the collectorate.
Group insurance
The group insurance for fishermen is governed by the National Fishermen Cooperative Federation in association with the State and central governments.
Under the scheme, the State and union governments are remitting Rs. 20.27 as premium per fishermen to the insurance company.
A sum of Rs. 18-lakh was given as compensation for families of 10 fishermen who lost their lives in mid-sea or went missing while fishing. Three fishermen who died due to natural calamities while fishing were given Rs. 1 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Besides this, a sum of Rs. 1.15-lakh was given to two families for accidental death and electrocution.
Chairman of the State Fishermen Cooperative Federation M. Xavier Manohar, District Panchayat Chairman M.S. Sarathamani, Deputy Director of Fisheries Department Lemac Jayakumar, Public Prosecutor A. Gnanasekar and others participated.
