Actor and celebrity campaigner Khushboo on Monday quit the DMK citing lack of recognition for her work in the party. Her announcement came a few hours after the party high-command decided to reorganise the district units.
She joined the DMK in 2010 against expectations that she would take to politics through the AIADMK. For many years, Khushboo anchored a popular reality show, ‘Jackpot,’ on the Jaya TV, fuelling speculations that she would eventually join the AIADMK.
In a letter to DMK chief M. Karunanidhi, Ms. Khushbu, who campaigned for the party during the recent Lok Sabha elections, said her toil for the party had remained a “one-way” road, indicating her disappointment at not being recognised in the party rank.
“Given that my dedication and toil will continue to remain a one-way road, the work that I have undertaken is giving me mental agony,” the letter said.
On twitter, she pointed out that she would always have the greatest regard for Mr. Karunanidhi, who she said, was like a father. Also, the actor ruled out joining any other party.
While it is not clear whether her resignation had been accepted, she had to face a number of controversies in the party over the years. In 2013, a remark she made on the succession battle in the party offended followers of DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin. Stones were hurled at her house in Chennai.
Since then, there had been reports of a strained relationship between the two, though Ms. Khushboo had consistently denied it.
