Actor Kushboo joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the presence of party president and Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, here on Friday.
Addressing mediapersons after admitting her into the party fold, Mr.Karunanidhi said for a long period Ms. Kushboo had been espousing progressive views in films. It was possible for her to effectively portray the role of Maniammai in the film ‘Periyar' because of her deep commitment to the ideals of Periyar and the DMK. She had always taken up the cause of women's betterment and had the ability to voice her concerns on issues concerning women.
The Chief Minister ruled out the possibility of fielding her against AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa in the next Assembly election.
Ms.Kushboo said as she was attracted by the DMK's ideologies and its commitment to women's empowerment. Various welfare measures implemented by the party had made her join the party. Asked whether she would continue to express her opinions freely, Ms.Kushboo said she would be cautious in making speeches because whatever she said would be linked to the party.
Denying that she had said that she would be joining the Congress, Ms.Kushboo said after the Supreme Court judgment she had only said she was attracted by the various welfare measures implemented by the Congress in Mumbai.
Asked whether she would quit the “Jackpot” programme, a reality show being telecast on Jaya TV, Ms.Kushboo said she would continue to act in films and conduct reality shows.
