Kerala Governor’s speech on Mullaperiyar riles delta farmers

June 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated October 18, 2016 02:47 pm IST - THANJAVUR:

A section of the Cauvery delta farmers have taken exception to the reported speech of Kerala Governor in that State’s Assembly regarding construction of a new reservoir at Mullaperiyar and has demanded the intervention of the President to set things right.

“The Kerala Government has thrown all norms to the wind and flouted court rulings while declaring through the Governor on the floor of the Kerala Assembly that a new dam will be constructed in lieu of the existing one at Mullaperiyar.

This is a flagrant violation of the norms and court orders,” said general secretary of the Tamizhaga Cauvery Farmers’ Association P.R. Pandian.

This is a challenge to the Constitution and an open violation of the Supreme Court order and calls for immediate intervention by the President for taking appropriate action against the Kerala Governor, Mr. Pandian demanded.

He said the association had planned to launch fast at Gudalur in Theni district on July 19 to protest the Kerala move to construct a new dam at Mullaperiyar for which Tamil Nadu must accord permission.

Mr. Pandian expressed delta farmers’ concern and disappointment over the continued silence maintained by the Prime Minister’s Office to the demands raised by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa during her meeting with Narendra Modi recently.
