Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s suggestions have been incorporated in ‘Samacheer Kalvi’ textbooks that will go for printing by the month-end, according to Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu.
According to him, the textbooks for classes I and VI in the first phase under uniform/equitable education system will be attractive and of good quality in terms of content, printing and size. They will have lots of visual elements.
“The Chief Minister has suggested that the font size be increased to make it easily readable for students. He was also particular that the content in the textbooks must be clear for correct understanding,” Mr. Thennarasu told TheHindu here on Wednesday.
The final checking of textbooks was nearing completion and they would be ready for distribution by the first week of June. The textbooks had been prepared for English and Tamil medium students. Mr. Thennarasu said that the new set of textbooks would be of A4 size printed on good quality paper.
The Minister, along with senior officials of the School Education Department, had met the Chief Minister recently and showed him the textbooks. Another important initiative now under way is to restructure the vocational group in higher secondary classes.
“Some reforms in training are essential for students of vocational stream. The subjects will be revamped and unpopular subjects in Plus 1 and Plus Two will be removed,” Mr. Thennarasu said.
The revamped vocational group would come into effect form the coming academic year itself and the focus would be on imparting hands-on training to students in the true spirit of the word ‘vocational,’ he said.
