Karunanidhi’s poser to government

May 17, 2013 01:20 pm | Updated 01:20 pm IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Thursday questioned how a government that is planning a Rs. 100-crore statue for ‘Mother Tamil’ can also introduce English as a medium of instruction.

“While the mother tongue is used as the medium of instruction across the world, the State government has hinted that Tamil need not be the medium of instruction. But, at the same time, it is talking of erecting a statue for Mother Tamil. Is it not a contradiction?” he asked.

Asked about Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s warning that political parties indulged in violence would be banned, Mr Karunanidhi also said a political party could not be banned just by invoking the word “violence.”

He said the release of advertisements to the media worth crores of rupees to highlight the achievements of the two-year rule of the AIADMK government could not be construed as an achievement.
