DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Monday wanted the CBI to probe the role of those involved in the granite quarrying scam since the days of the previous AIADMK regime.
Asked whether cases had been filed against former Minister (Ponmudi) and son of a Union Minister (M.K. Alagiri) out of political vendetta, Mr. Karunanidhi said though there were reports about those against whom cases had been filed, it was impossible now to tell the culprits from the innocent.
“So the CBI should probe the role all those who are involved in the granite business since the days of the AIADMK regime,” he told reporters after the party’s high-level executive committee meeting.
Accusing the AIADMK government of filing cases against the Opposition to divert people’s attention from its inefficient administration, he said the DMK would organise a human chain across the State on October 5 to highlight the failure of the government on all fronts.
In Chennai, the chain will be formed from the district collectorate to the lighthouse and DMK men clad in black shirts would participate in the agitation.
“Democracy has been buried, press freedom suppressed, opposition voice snuffed out, and the livelihood of the voters has become uncertain. Industry, agriculture, education and basic infrastructure are crippled,” said a resolution adopted in the meeting.
The meeting adopted a resolution urging the Centre to seek review of the earlier judgment cancelling all 2G licences in the wake of the apex court’s latest judgment that auction could not be the only method for allocating natural resources.
The DMK will send party treasurer M.K. Stalin and Parliamentary party leader T.R. Baalu to Geneva to hand over the resolutions of the Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation conference to the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
The meeting wanted India to move a resolution in the United Nations helping Sri Lankan Tamils to determine their future. Mr. Karunanidhi said that unlike the State government, the Centre should not waver on its stand on Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project. He said the DMK welcomed the project since it would increase power generation and would continue to support it.
“But when there was an objection to the project on the ground that it would affect the livelihood of the people, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa convened a Cabinet meeting and asked the Centre to stop the project work till the fears of the people were allayed. But now, instead of holding talks with the people or convincing them through government and enlightening them, she is resorting to oppressive measures. We condemn this attitude,” he said.
