Intensifying his pressure on the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader M. Karunanidhi on Sunday unequivocally stated that his party would not continue in the alliance if the Centre failed to take steps to incorporate adequate amendments to the draft resolution against Sri Lanka in the United Nations Human Rights Council.
“I doubt whether our relationship will continue if our demands are not conceded to. I am sure it will not continue,” he told journalists after releasing copies of his letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
“I am writing this letter with immense mental agony and feeling of having been let down by the government of India,” he said in the letter.
One of the amendments, he said, was to “declare that the genocide and war crimes had been committed and inflicted on Eelam Tamils by the Sri Lankan Army and administrators.”
The second amendment was for the creation of a credible and independent international commission of enquiry in a time-bound manner into the allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, violation of international human rights law, violation of international humanitarian law and crime of genocide against Tamils.
India had time till March 18 to suggest the amendments, as the voting was expected to take place either on March 20 or 21, he said.

DMK and its leaders always say that they are here to protect the interest of Tamil people all over the world. People are very clever not to believe them. For them, their personal interest comes first for which they are ready to sacrifice others.The DMK was in power when tragedy took place in Sri Lanka.They did nothing.Till the Lok Sabha election comes next year, the DMK will continue to enjoy the fruits of power at the centre.
Mark my words. DMK will never pull out of UPA until the latter stays in
power. DMK staged the same threat with FDI retail issue, we all know
what was the result.
@Ravi Kumar, let's not sweep the moral responsibility of a nation
under the carpet by describing it as a regional interest. What
nationalism has to serve by being insensitive to human rights
violations of it's brethren 30 kilometers away. True nationalism
is all about truly caring for all the regions within the nation.
We have umpteen examples in the history and current geopolitical
environment that nations which have failed and fizzled have all
directly or indirectly undermined human rights. One hopes our
country doesn't become one more example in the history for wrong
reasons. Our nation may not be a super power in military might
and wealth, but certainly a super power in humanist thinking and
non-violent philosophy. Hope we uphold that value forever - even
in the UNHRC resolution.
It is crying over spilled milk. All are responsible. The Government of India, Sri Lanka ,the
Tamil Tigers and finally the DMK. India is off the path of rightness. Only God knows why
India is acting in a mischievous manner towards the US resolution. India should be the first
to bring the resolution against the Sri Lanka Government.
