Leaders from Tamil Nadu continued to pressure the Union government to vote against Sri Lanka when a U.S.-sponsored resolution on the island nation's alleged war crimes came up before the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
Even as the DMK, a UPA constituent, issued a veiled threat to the United Progressive Alliance regime, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa expressed disappointment with the stand of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying he had given no firm commitment in his reply to her earlier letters on voting for the resolution.
The DMK warned the Centre that if India failed to support the resolution against Sri Lanka in the ongoing session in Geneva it would be deemed a “betrayal” of the Tamils.
“India should support the resolution. Otherwise, the DMK would consider it as a betrayal of Tamils,” DMK president M. Karunanidhi told journalists here before leaving for the by-election campaign in Sankarankoil.
Mr. Karunanidhi said the Centre could not give a proper answer in Parliament to posers from DMK MPs Tiruchi Siva and Kanimozhi on why it intervened in Bangladesh if it was following a policy of keeping away from other countries' affairs.
Asked whether the DMK would withdraw its support to the Central government if India failed to support the resolution, he said he alone could not take a decision on the issue. “The party's executive committee will discuss and take a decision,” he said.
Ms. Jayalalithaa told reporters before leaving for the by-election campaign that the reply did not have a firm commitment by the Union government. Recalling that she had written two letters to the Prime Minister, she said she would continue to press the Centre to back the move on the draft resolution.
Later, in a campaign speech, she faulted the Centre for not responding to the Assembly's resolution calling upon the Union government to take steps for declaring as war criminals those involved in the killing of Sri Lankan Tamils and imposition of economic sanctions on Sri Lanka. On the contrary, there were reports that India was going to oppose the resolution.

Dear Indian Leaders,
Please join Geneva to bring real human rights actions to all these
innocent killings of Tamil Ethnics who were trapped in the north. If you favor this government for diplomatic reasons,You will be punished by
God,and you all will be connected to these actions.
If India does not supports the US resolution and DMK still remains in the ally it is evident that DMK Congress could not win even a single seat in the forthcoming parliament elections
During the Tamil Eelam War with Srilankan army, for decades both the parties had done a lot of attrocities . But when it came down to Deadily Terrorist Prabhakaran and his family,it became inhuman massacare and a resolution was made against Srilanka.
My Tamil Politicians ,can i ask you one question , What was Prabhakaran and his family contribution for the Tamils in Srilanka. That he regrouped a terrorrist organisation called LTTE and trained children below 12 years to kill and ladies for sex and human Bomb.
For this contribution DMK and AIADMK is making this much problem in INDIAN PARLIAMENT. Its a shame on both political parties
Good move by political parties. India should condem human rights violion and support all actions against it. Not only in Sri Lanka anywhere in the world. We are a democratic country of 1 billion we should not get intimidated by war criminals like Rajapakshe. If this resolution is a firsttep to bring the perpetrators to justice, it is most welcome.
Golden opportunity for Dr. M Karunanidhi to demonstrate his solidarity with the killed innocent souls of Srilanka who can not speak now.
Tamilians must understand that India is too large for Sri Lanka to ignore. We can solve all our problems with Sri Lanka ourselves if required by force. But we DONT NEED UN resolution or British intervention to take up issue with Sri Lanka. This is a ploy by British Govt. to drive wedge between India and sriLanka. We must punish the guilty ourselves. Dont allow third party to meddle and reduce our importance and have divisions within ourselves.
It is very unfortunate to witness the Congress government's
consistent apathy to Tamils issue. How many more betrayals has the
government planned? This consistent anti-Tamils stand adopted by
the center poses serious doubts about the governments commitment to
protecting India's federalism.
Must Tamil Leaders really need to show their immaturity on this topic for the sake of regional politics and ignore the wider implications of such a move? Do they understand the Indian Foreign policy? If they don't, well they should remain what they are -- a regional party and stop interfering in NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL policies. When China is spreading its tentacles far beyond its borders to encircle us, we need to tread the issue carefully. It's prudent for India to act like a big brother and all, but also cut some slack to our smaller neighbors, especially those in the south and east to improve relations. In the end, it is nothing personal but National interest that should play a role in making a decision on such matter.
Ashamed to say it is Gandhi Nadu! Shame on India!
It transcends the imagination of any right thinking human, why India is not joining other civilized countries in condemning the barbarious acts committed by an undisciplined army aganinst its own citizens. Having observed my country's spineless behaviour in standing up to support what is right since I learnt reading and writing, it is a shame, it still remains the same coward and morally bankrupt country. What a shame to be an Indian? The whole world knows, extreme attrocities were committed by the military and other law enforcement agencies against innocent civilians. It is about time for India to stand up and express unequivocal support to the victims and take leadership in condemning the genocide. Grow up cowards. Get some courage. Live with dignity and command some respect.
Atlast both the major parties have the same opinion on congress.though it is too late atleast they understood the stepmother attitude of congress government towards Tamilnadu. not only in srilanlan issue but in cavery water and mullaiperiyar issue also not properly dealt by the central government.one or other these same parties carried the congress on their shoulder for their own cause. but the congress always betrayed them and our state. if congress did not act atleast now, it will be thrown in to the dust bin in tamilnadu.
It is sad that India is becoming such a cowardly nation unwilling to
stand up for human rights and demand accountability from the Sri Lankan
government for mind-numbing atrocities committed against innocent
civilians. The Manmohan Singh government comes across as impotent at
best, or as one that doesn't care about the situation of the Tamils, who
after all are a minority even within India, at worst. We don't deserve a
permanent seat in the UN Security Council with such an attitude.
