Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has expressed his condolences to Jyoti Basu’s family members and CPI(M) workers.

“I was deeply grieved on hearing the news of the death of one of the foremost leaders of the Communist movement and a good friend,” he said in a statement.

He recalled his close association with Mr. Basu in creating a secular front.

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa recalled Mr. Basu’s visit to her residence when she was Chief Minister.

“His passing away is an irreparable loss to the nation. In his passing away, the people of India have lost a true patriot, a renowned personality and a great humanist,” she said.
